Band

Teacher: Mrs. Jenna Inscho jinscho@cdeducation.org

Welcome to the Band class at Our Lady of Peace School! I have been blessed to be a part of the Watterson Area Band Program for the past 10 years. I am a 2001 graduate of Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education and am licensed to teach any kind of music. Over the next few years, I plan to attend Capital University's Summer Master's Program to earn a Master's degree in Music Education.

My current duties include band 5-8 at Our Lady of Peace, St. Timothy, and Delaware St. Mary, as well as assisting with the Bishop Watterson High School Band. I am also one of the directors of the Watterson Area Honor Band Program. The Honor Band is made up of students from all nine Watterson feeder schools and meets one evening a week to prepare challenging music for several performance venues.

I have been married to my wonderful husband, Thad, for 11 years and we have two beautiful children; Daphne who is eight years old and in 3rd grade, and Braden who is four years old.

GENERAL INFORMATION

The Our Lady of Peace Band is part of the Watterson Area Band Program. The band is an opportunity for students in grades 5-8 to continue their music education through learning an instrument. Band students meet during their scheduled music time on Mondays and Tuesdays, and participate in two concerts at Bishop Watterson High School each year with the other feeder schools of the Watterson Area Band Program. This year’s concert dates are Tueday, December 6, 2011, and Tuesday, May 8, 2012, and there are three rehearsals before each concert where are nine feeder school bands combine to prepare (a sheet will go out at least a month before the scheduled dates.) The 5th grade band begins with the “instrument fittings” in May of the 4th grade year, during which time students can try out different instruments to see which suits them best. We meet during music class and perform in the two concerts at Watterson. Students in grades 6-8 may also start band, but are required to take private lessons to catch up with their classmates. The 5th grade band is referred to as Beginning Band, the 6th grade band is referred to as Intermediate Band, and the 7th and 8th grade bands combine to form the Advanced Band.

There is a fee associated with the Watterson Area Band Program of approximately $285 per year, which covers the cost of instruction and music that is supplied for the students. There are payment plans available and a student should not opt out of band due to cost. We believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn a new skill and appreciation of music. Please contact Bill Weisner at Bishop Watterson (614-268-8671) should you have any questions. A registration form will be handed out to every student who is fitted for band and should be mailed to Watterson with the first payment. I will not accept any payments.

Students are also strongly encouraged to take private lessons to develop their individual sound and performance level. Each student has a slightly different learning style and rate, and individual lessons are a great way to address any issues that might arise. Please contact me for a list of teachers in the area if you are interested.

If you have any questions or comments at any time, feel free to contact me at jinscho@cdeducation.org or at (614)268-8671 ext. 335.

Thank you for your interest in and support of the Our Lady of Peace and Bishop Watterson Area Band Programs! I look forward to another great year!
Jenna Inscho – Band Director

MUSICIAN'S PRAYER

God Bless my music, that it may glorify Your name. May using it to serve You always be my aim. Let it be a witness to Your majesty and love, and remind us that You're watching from Your throne above. Oh Lord, I ask for guidence in everything I do, and pray You'll make my music an instrument for You. Amen.

NEWS AND NOTES

Make sure you are working on your practice charts!

 BAND GRADING

Band grades are based on the standards for band in the Columbus Diocese.  I use the following to determine the grades given: attendance, participation, preparedness, individual playing quizzes, daily ensemble playing, scales, theory workbook pages, theory quizzes, and concert rehearsals and performances.  A plus (+) indicates that a student is exceeding the standard, a check indicates that a student is meeting the standard, an "I" means that a student is not always meeting the standard, and an "N" means the student is not meeting the standard.  Please feel free to contact me at any time regarding the Band grades.
