2011-12 Supply List

Welcome to the Second Grade at Our Lady of Peace School! My name is Miss Barbara Durbin. This is my 36th year teaching. I have been fortunate to spend my entire career at O.L.P.

I hold a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Ohio Dominican College.  I became a National Board Certified Teacher in November, 2003.  In December 2009, I completed my Masters in Education at Ohio Dominican University.

When you visit our school, you will learn that one of the year-long themes of our classroom is Birds. (This is a focus of the Second Grade life science curriculum.) Please understand that the children will learn more about birds than I ever hope to know. (Their minds absorb so much!)

Every year, we participate in a Service Learning Project. Two years ago, the Second Graders collected money for school supplies for a new school being bulit in Vietnam. The program was called "Kids Building Hope": (See the link below for more details.) The class studied the Vietnamese culture and learned about the children who received their donations.

Last year, the class solicited pledges for the reading they did during the month of February.  The money was donated to the Schoolwide Service Learning Program, H20 for Life.  We learned how precious water is and that not everyone in the world has clean water.  We helped provide money to build a well at an all girls school in Afghanistan.

As 1st graders, this year's 2nd graders participated in Partners in Conservation (PIC). This fall they were invited to perform a song they composed at the Rwandan Fete at the Columbus Zoo. The Fete is a party which helps raise funds for PIC. Their song demonstrates all they learned and did to help the people and gorillas of Rwanda. Click here to find out more about PIC.

Refrain: P.I.C ... PIC! Is "Partner's in Conservation"
We'll do our chores ... NOW! To help God's Creation!
Verse 1: Rwanda is the country that needs our help the most
We can help by buying books, stoves, and goats!
Verse 2: The goats are for milk and cheese, and any other dairy that you please
We'll help them get computer screens, it's true they're not our enemies!
Bridge: Getting new stoves that use less wood, save the gorillas homes
This time, for good!

As this year progresses, we will do a service learning project that will continue our goal to demonstrate a passion for learning and helping others!
