2011-12 Supply List

Welcome to Grade Five!

My name is Mrs. Alicia Zeyen, and this is my seventh year teaching at OLP. I have a BA in English and Philosophy from the University of Michigan. I earned a MA in Teaching, specializing in math and language arts for middle grades, from Otterbein College.  I am looking forward to my third year of teaching fifth grade.

I feel a strong family connection with OLP because both my husband and I graduated from OLP. We have four children: Kira (8th grade), Alex (2nd grade), Zoë (1st grade), and Joe (age 3).

Fifth grade is a year of great growth and change. We will surely have an exciting year as we focus on our theme of “understanding relationships.” Students will learn to work together towards a common goal in all subject areas. We will uncover inner strengths and areas in which we can improve. In religion, we will highlight the sacraments as we focus on enriching our relationship with God. We will also respond to the call of Catholic Christians to serve others. Central topics in math involve working with and understanding the relationships among fractions, decimals and percents. Language arts will focus on improving reading and comprehension skills, while improving self-expression through writing. Major topics in social studies include Native Americans, the American Revolution, Immigration, US Government, and basic economic principles. In health students will learn more about themselves and how they can stay healthy. In the spring, they will study human growth and development to help make sense of all the changes that they are, or will soon be, experiencing. I know we will have a fabulous year together!
