Physical Education

Teachers: Mr.Joe Koebel jkoebel@cededucation.org and
                    Ms. Stephanie Doyle sdoyle@cdeducation.org

Welcome to physical education! P.E. is taught by Mr. Koebel and Ms. Doyle. Mr. Koebel teaches P.E. for grades first through eighth and Ms. Doyle teaches P.E. for Kindergarten, first, and second grade.

Notes from Mr. Koebel: I have been teaching in the Diocese of Columbus for 11 years and I have been at OLP for seven years! Time flies when you’re having fun!

The three requirements I have of all the students are: that they follow the gym rules and the game rules, that they participate to the best of their ability, and that they show good sportsmanship.

Some reminders about gym class:
• All students are required to wear tennis shoes.
• The gym uniform for grades five through eight is an OLP gym shirt and blue or black shorts.
• Students are allowed to bring bags to keep their school uniform while they are participating in physical education class.

Mr. Koebel’s Extra Effort Assignments – 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades

Each quarter each student will have the opportunity to earn a plus in participation, by dressing in P.E. clothes and participating in class. This plus must be earned each quarter; it does not carry over from quarter to quarter.
In addition, each student will have the opportunity to earn a plus in the 5 other P.E. standards. These pluses can only be earned by doing extra-effort assignments. These assignments may be written (handwritten or typed) or they may be given orally (3-5 minutes in duration). If doing an oral presentation, a student must schedule a time with me, before or after school, to give his/her oral assignment. The assignment choices are:

• You are the coach- explain to me what sport you coach and why you coach it. Tell me some of the drills you use to improve individual and team skills. Explain what strategy you plan to use during game time or competition: example- man-to-man defense in basketball. What is the most important thing you can teach a player in your sport?

• You are the player- choose a professional or amateur player you admire, then become that player. Tell me where you were born, where you were educated, when you started playing your sport, who you admire, your greatest accomplishment, etc.

• You are the P.E. teacher. Explain one game or sport that we currently play in P.E. class. Do you like it? How can we make it better? Then explain one game or sport, which we do not currently play, that you would like to see us play.

• Sportsmanship- choose a person that you feel displays good sportsmanship. Written Report- in 100 words or more tell me why you think this person is a good sport. Oral- in 3-5 minutes explain to me why you think this person is a good sport.

• Compare & Contrast- Written Report- in 100 words or more compare and contrast two sports. How are they alike? How do they differ? Oral- in 3-5 minutes compare and contrast two sports. How are they alike? How do they differ?

• Top Ten Reasons/Benefits- list the top ten reasons/benefits for participating in P.E. class or the top ten reasons/benefits for participating in you favorite sport. This can be done in written form or as an oral report.

• Write a personal fitness chart that lasts 1 week in duration and shows how you have followed the plan.

• Make an exercise video. This may be done as a group. The video must be at least 5 minutes in duration. You need to describe the exercise and the benefit of the activity, as well as demonstrate the exercise.

• Have your own idea? Explain it to me for approval. Then proceed with the project.

These assignments must be turned in 1 week before the end of the quarter to earn a plus for that quarter.
